Lesson # 7

Breaking Down The Presentation

As you present the gospel your facial expressions and the tone of your voice should give away that you are excited about heaven. Pay attention to what you are saying, and how you are saying it. These people are expecting to here the best news. We should present it as the great news that it is. There are times that you will move quickly through the presentation. There will be other times that you will move slower. If we are sensitive to the spirit, the spirit will lead us.

Realize There are two things that we need to realize in order to understand this good news.

1. Heaven is a free gift. For a long time I thought you earned your way to heaven. I thought you could do this through good living, going to church, being kind to others, or things like that. Then I learned about God's grace. Eph 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Heaven can not be earned or deserved. It is absolutely free. As a matter of a fact it is a gift from God. Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. We can't give God anything to deserve this gift. This will make more sense as we begin to understand man better.

2. All men and women have sinned. There is no one in the world that is perfect. Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Would you agree that all have sinned? We all have sinned in word, thought, deed, and many other areas as well, because of this sin man can't save himself. It would be difficult for someone who can not swim to save themselves from drowning.

God can not let any sin into heaven. The standard to get to heaven would be a life of no sin. Since we all have sinned, this disqualifies any of us from going to heaven by being good enough. We will see that God has provided another way.

Recognize To better understand this good news it is helpful to recognize these two things.

1. God is merciful and does not want to punish us. God wants everyone to come and be in heaven with him. Because of God's holiness he must punish sin. Most people do not understand that sin can not go unpunished. Many people feel that sure they have sinned, but they have not been all that bad. Therefore they will go to heaven. It only takes one sin to classify a person as a sinner. That one sin is sufficient to keep that person from going to heaven. This is where God's son Jesus comes into the picture.

2. Jesus died for our sins. Using the book example, show how Jesus made the payment for our sins. Jesus paid a debt that we could not pay. When we receive Jesus as our personal saviour, we are accepting his payment for our sins. Sin has to be punished, and sin was punished at the cross through Jesus. You see Jesus purchased a place in heaven for you through his blood, and now he offers this to you as a free gift. We can receive this free gift by faith.

Receive In order to receive Christ we have to have the right kind of faith.

Many people have intellectual faith. This is the kind of faith that believes that God exists, or that Jesus did live, die, and rise again. The devil believes and trembles, but this will not get them to heaven.

Other people have temporary faith. This would be trusting God to help you for things in this life. The faith to get you through financial crisis, sickness, or other temporary events.

The faith that causes a person to receive the gift of eternal life is permanent faith. This is trusting Jesus Christ completely for your salvation. Not trusting in your works or abilities. Use the chair example to demonstrate this kind of faith. Jesus alone, not what we have, can or will do.
