Places where the versions differ
in the New Testament.

MATTHEW 1:25

King James:         And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn  son: and he called his name JESUS.

New King James:     and did not know her till she had brought forth her  firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.

American Standard:  and knew her not till she had brought forth a son: and he  called his name JESUS.

Living Bible:       but she remained a virgin until her Son was born; and  Joseph named him ``Jesus.''

(It is interesting that the same manuscript is used in the ASV, NIV, RSV  and other versions than the KJV and they differ in so many places.  It makes me wonder what is the purpose.  Why are there so many variations between these supposedly better translations?)

 

MATTHEW 5:44

King James:         But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that  curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them   which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

New King James:     "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse  you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,

American Standard:  but I say unto you, love your enemies, and pray for them  that persecute you;

New International:  Here a great number of disabled people used to lie--the   blind, the lame, the paralyzed.

 JOHN  5:4

King James:         For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool,  and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the  troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of  whatsoever disease he had.

 . * The "on me"  is changed to " in Me" in the NKJV is changed without the authority from the Greek text  or any other reason to make a difference in the original KJV.   Prepositions are important to the understanding.  Here "on" is showing trust in believing.

    This is not an uncommon occurrence in the NKJV..

 

American Standard:  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth hath  eternal life.

 

Living Bible:       ``How earnestly I tell you this--anyone who believes in me  already has eternal life!

 

New International:  I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.

 JOHN  7: 53

Most of the modern versions will suggest  that John 7:53 to 8:11 should not be in the Bible.

King James:         And every man went unto his own house.

 

New King James:     And everyone went to his own house.

*  [ ]  Text that is set inside this type of bracket " [ ]" in the ASV is not considered as part of the originals and is describes  as added. ]  However, the greatest number of manuscripts have these words and certainly should be included in the Bible.

 

Living Bible:       Then the meeting broke up and everybody went home.

 

New International:  Then each went to his own home.

 

Revised Standard:   They went each to his own house,

 

JOHN  8:16

King James:         And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not  alone, but I and the Father that sent me.

 

New King James:     "And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not  alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.

 

American Standard:  Yea and if I judge, my judgment is true; for I am not  alone, but I and the Father that sent me.

It is very interesting that the same Greek text was used to translate the ASV, NIV, RSV,  and many other modern versions and they do not include the same information in each.   Here the RSV  leaves out the name "Father".

 

JOHN 9:35

King James:         Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had   found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of  God?

 

New King James:     Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had  found him, He said to him, "Do you believe in the Son of  God?''

 

American Standard:  Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and finding him, he  said, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?

 

Living Bible:       When Jesus heard what had happened, he found the man and  said, ``Do you believe in the Messiah?''

 

New International:  Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found  him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"

 

Revised Standard:   Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found   him he said, "Do you believe in the  Son of Man                ?"

 

It is very interesting that the same Greek text was used to translate the ASV, NIV, RSV,  and many other modern versions and they do not include the same information in each.  There are changes here that are very inconsistent with each of the translations.

King James:         Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead  was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I  thank thee that thou hast heard me.

Living Bible:       If you love your neighbor as much as you love yourself you  will not want to harm or cheat him, or kill him or steal from him. And you won't sin with his wife or want what is  his, or do anything else the Ten Commandments say is wrong.  All ten are wrapped up in this one, to love your neighbor as  you love yourself.

 

New International:  The commandments, "Do not commit adultery," "Do not murder," "Do not steal," "Do not covet,"  and whatever other  commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

 

Revised Standard:   The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery, You shall  not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet," and any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence, "You   shall love your neighbor as yourself."

 

 

ROMANS 14:6

King James:         He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and  he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not  regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth   God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth  not, and giveth God thanks.

New International:  He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He  who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to  God.

 

Revised Standard:   He who observes the day, obserrves it in honor of the Lord.  He also who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives   thanks to God; while he who abstains, abstains in honor of  the Lord and gives thanks to God.

 

ROMANS 14:21

King James:         It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any  thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is  made weak.

 

New King James:     It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do  anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is   made weak.

 

American Standard:  It is good not to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor to do  anything whereby thy brother stumbleth.

 

Living Bible:       The right thing to do is to quit eating meat or drinking   wine or doing anything else  that offends your brother or makes him sin.

 

New International:  It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall.

ROMANS 15:29

King James:         And I am sure that, when I come unto you, I shall come in   the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.

GALATIANS 3:17

King James:         And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed  before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and  thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the  promise of none effect.

Living Bible:       Here's what I am trying to say: God's promise to save  through faith--and God wrote this promise down and signed  it--could not be canceled or changed four hundred and thirty  years later when God gave the Ten Commandments.

 

New International:  What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later,  does not set aside the covenant previously established by  God and thus do away with the promise.

 

Revised Standard:   This is what I mean: the law, which came four hundred and   thirty years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously  ratified by God, so as to make the promise void.

 

 

GALATIANS 4:7

King James:         Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a  son, then an heir of God through Christ.

 

New King James:     Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a  son, then an heir of God through Christ.

 

American Standard:  So that thou art no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if  a son, then an heir through God.

 

Living Bible:       Now we are no longer slaves, but God's own sons. And since  we are his sons, everything he has belongs to us, for that  is the way God planned.

 

New International:  So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are   a son, God has made you also an heir.

GALATIANS  6:15

King James:         For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any  thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

American Standard:  For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision,  but a new creature.

 

Living Bible:       It doesn't make any difference now whether we have been  circumcised or not; what counts is whether we really have  been changed into new and different people.

GALATIANS 6:17

King James:         From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my  body the marks of the Lord Jesus.

American Standard:  Henceforth, let no man trouble me; for I bear branded on my  body the marks of Jesus.

American Standard:  And the seventh poured out his bowl upon the air; and there came forth a great voice out of the temple, from the throne, saying, It is done:

REVELATION 20:9

King James:         And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire  came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

 

New King James:     They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down  from God out of heaven and devoured them.

 

American Standard:  And they went up over the breadth of the earth, and  compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down out of heaven, and devoured them.

 

Living Bible:       They will go up across the broad plain of the earth and surround God's people and the beloved city of Jerusalem on every side. But fire from God in heaven will flash down on the attacking armies and consume them.

 

New International:  They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God's people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them.

REVELATION 21:24

King James:         And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the  light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.

 

New King James:     And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its  light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and  honor into it.

 

American Standard:  And the nations shall walk amidst the light thereof: and  the kings of the earth bring their glory into it.
